The Minister for Public "Works lias given instructions to survey the country between Inangahua Junction and Reef ton, with a,view to extension oi, the Midland railway to the latter 1 town, so as to join the projected line between Westport and luangahua Junction. NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. Three slight outbreaks of fire occurred in Devon-street last nig-ht, apparently the work of an incendiary. The police arrested a young- man named Thos. Payne, who was tried in the Supreme Court a year ago on a similar charge, but was discharged, the jury not a.greeing. WESTPORT, iliis day. The return from the Britannia quartz mine, north of Westport, is 149 ozs retorted gold from 08 tons o£ stone. INVERCARGILL, this day. Regarding the proposed association of Chambers of Commerce, the local Chamber, decided to hang the subject up till it had the memo, and articles of association before it. The Chamber's committee drew attention to the fact that on the Australian messages the new rates for cablegrams of over 8 words, are higher than,the old rates. It was* resolved that this matter be laid before the Postmaster-General, with a request that he will endeavour to obtain a lower rate, failing which that the Government consider the propriety of laying a colonial cable. CHRISTCHURCH, this Cay. The death is announced of Chas. Ensor, of Baleairn. He came to the colony in 1861, and had been Chairman 'of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Company since its commencement ill 1880, and the present position of the Co-operative Company is mainly due to his strong common sense and financial ability. He was greatly respected. He leaves a widow and family. *
