LONDON, February 22. In the House of Commons Mr. .7. E. Redmond moved an amendment to the Address-in-Reply, asking Imperial credit for compulsory wholesale purchase of land in Ireland. Mr. T. W. Russell, in a violent speech, seconded the motion, urging that a timely concession should be made lest bloodshed should ensue. The land owners, he asserted, were mere rout chargers. Mr. A. J. Balfour, First Lord f>f the Treasury, said compulsion would be wild and ruinous, and it would also ruin the labourers. The Irish Lands ; Purchase Acts had successfully created sixty thousand peasant proprietors.

Mr. G. Wyndham said it was impossible to risk 120 millions and plunge Ireland into litigation.

Mr. Bannerrnau supported the amendment, which was rejected by 235 to 140. The Irish Nationalist press remind the electors that their claims were only granted in response to turbulent violence, and a refusal to pa}' rents.
