' CBy .Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Information has been received that the proposed magnetic observatory for this city will be established shortly. It is unfortunate it is not already established, because' the Antarctic expedition shortly to leave London would probably have made New Zealand its base of operations, whereas it is now intended to proceed from Mcl bourne. NELSON, this day. Princess Lubecki, known in r.he colonies as Madame Lubecki, died here yesterday, aged 86. Deceased was the widow of the late Prince Alois Konstßntin Lubecki, formerly of Warsaw (Poland), who settled in England after the failure of (he Polish revolution in 1831, in which lie took n prominent part. The deceased Princess, who was a native of Kent, had resided in Nelson for the last six years. ' DUNEDIN, this day. A fire at Eaikorai at 2.30. this morning totally destroyed the house owned by Alfred Washer, and occupied by a plumoer and watchmaker. The contents of the building are valued at £420. There is no insurance on the property.
