RESOLUTION BY DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the meeting- of the Devonport Borough Council last evening Mr. J. C. Macky (Mayor) presiding, the following- sympathetic remarks were made by His Worship: Gentlemen: To-night the heart of the greatest Empire the world has ever seen throbs with sympathy for the greatest monarch it has ever had. Indeed, it would be difficult to find a part of the world which does not wait to-night with breathless interest for news of our beloved Queen. Such a widespread anxiety about any one person has never been known in the

world before, and prayers on her behalf have been going tip to God from peoples of every creed and nationality. Our beloved Queen, by her many noble qualities, both as a woman and as a Sovereign, has won the hearts of all. Her sympathies and her help have gone out in all directions, wherever there was need. Her example has been the inspiration of many a noble life, and has tended more than any other influence to establish a Government which is as re« mai-kable for its purity and justice an it is for its invariable strength. In short, she has been herself at once the greatest ornament, as well as the greatest pillar, of the most glorious ]Seriod of the world's history, and we rejoice at the latest news of her slight recovery. I beg leave to move that the following resolution be forwarded, under the seal of the Council, to His Excellency the Governor;! "That the Borough Council of Devonport have learned with the deepest regret of the dangerous illness of our most noble and gracious Sovereign and Empress Queen Victoria, and we join with the people of all nations in the prayer that Providence may yet spare her to reign over our great Empire."

Mr. Oliver Mays seconded the motion, and heartily endorsed the remarks of the Mayor.

The resolution was carried, all the members standing.

On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr. Niccol, the meeting was* then adjoiirned till Monday next.
