SYDNEY. Jauary 2:7. | Representatives of the Xew Hebrides'! Mission Synod placed before Mr Hnr-,f ton, as Minister for External Affairs,! a statement, of their ease. They ac-| cased the French .of maladministra-| tion in reference to land dealing with| the natives. The Rev. Mr Paton de-| dared-that if the French claims \vere| admitted a large part of the New! Hebrides would already belong to| them. The Rev. Mr Small declared! that Captain Rich, of the RingaroomaJ as Chairman of the Mixed Commission,! had done all in his power to depress! and retard British interests in the Is-| lands. The deputation wished the ap-| pointment of some authority to in-| vestigate the land claims. A Jointg Commission could not govern the Is-| lands. What was wanted was annoxa-ffi tion by Britain. Mr Barton, in reply.| promised to give very serious consider-I ation to the statements made. He| considered it his duty to make ropre-| sentation to the Secretary for theg Colonies. R?
