FIRE AT HUNTERVILLE.

A HOTEL AND 15 SHOPS

DESTROYED.

MARTOX, this day. Shortly alter midnight fire broke out in the front portion of David Halkim's store, at Huntervillc, and quickly spread to the adjoining premises. Fifteen shops and the Argyle Hotel were destroyed. The premises destroyed were as follows: — W. C. Hancock ,saddler. C. Bray, hairdresser. ./.eMcEldowney. draper. The Argyle Hotel. Ryan, tailor. Argyle Stables. A. E. Remington, chemist. Skerman and Co. (new premises). Mrs Currie, fruiterer. G, W. 13. Morris, grocer. Temperance Hall and Library. Yuen Lee, fruiterer. J. W. Batt, dentist, and A portion of Harpers stables. A Chinaman's cabinetmaking stiop was also destroyed.

Only three shops at the extreme end of Bruce-street are now standing. These would have been destroyed had the Brigade not pulled Harper's stables down.

In the other street large sheets of iron were placed against a portion of the Argyle stables. This prevented fire from attacking the Argyle Hall and shops ad joining.

Messrs Ellis Bros.' and Valder's store was damaged considerably, and if"was only with the assistance of wet blankets that it was saved from being destroyed.

The damage is estimated at £20,000,

The following companies are interested in amounts varying from £800 to £1500:—United, Imperial, Alliance, Australian Alliance, Commercial Union, Royal, New Zealand, Standard, London and Liverpool.
