A plucky act is reported from Otorohanga. A few days ago a number of boys were bathing in the Waipa River near the railway bridge, when Arthur Cribb, 7 years of age, who could not swim, got oait of his depth, and was about to drown. A lad named Stanley Ellis, aged 13 years, son of Mr. J. W. Ellis, at once went to the rescue. The task proved a difficult one, as the river is somewhat swift at this point, and, in addition, Cribb had clasped his wouldbe rescuer round the neck. Young Ellis stuck bravely to his work, and finally succeeded in getting the lad ashore, though in doing so he had to crawl along the bottom of the river for some short distance before he could get into water shallow enough to enable him to stand upright. Both boys were very much exhausted on reaching the bank. This gallant action has been the subject of much favourable comment in the district, and it is to be hoped that efforts will be made to have the brave deed recognised by the Humane Society.

Captain Tucker, •who left Gisborne with a party of men for Campbell Island, reached the island per steamer Kimu in exactly a week from the date of leaving Gisborne. Captain Tucker took from the Bluff 1000 2-tooth ewes for the purpose of stocking the is*land, and had the good fortune to land all save thirteen, which were lost on the voyage. He mentions that he is very pleased with the island from what he has seen of it, the country being mostly open and rolling, with a fair area of ploughable land. He mentions that as they were landing the sheep there were seals sporting round the vessel, and it was actually found necessary to frighten them off. The Rinru leaves for the islands from the Bluff on the 23rd with a second consignment of sheep, and Captain Tucker returns by her.
