THE NEW HEBRIDES.
SYDNEY, this day.
A letter received from Mr. 11. Forlong, a New Zealander, who is labouring- as a missionary at Malekula, states that the French claim ' the whole of South Malekula aud the small islands on that coast, including the island where Mr. Forlong is settled. Two agents of a French trading company ordered Mr. Forlong to leave, but he declined. Later on, during his absence, the agents returned with twelve armed natives, broke open his hut, and removed much of Mr. Forlong's effects. They left a warning that if he had not cleared out before January Bth they would come back and kick up a row. Mr. Forlong's letter records the death of Mrs. McKenzie, formerly of Dunedin, and stationed with her husband at Malekula, the result of fever.
