SWIMMING.
The Auckland Swimming Club met, on Wednesday evening last, when a new committee was elected in the place of the old one, whose members had resigned. It was resolved to hold a 72 yards handicap race at the baths on Wednesday evening next, and it was decided to hold the Club's carnival at a date to be- fixed by a future meeting.
Tyler easily won his heat in the 100 Yards Championship in 69 3-ssec.
Christchurch files describe the final for the 100 Yards Championship as a magnificent race. The following is a description of the race. There was a simmer of excitement all over the enclosure when the four redoubtable swimmers came forward for the final heat. Mr Francis sent the men away to a splendid start, Champion touching the water last. A desperate race took place. At the end of the first lap the four men touched together. Coming back Champion and Tyler drew ahead, and finished the f>o yards together. Both men were swimmingdesperately, and the cheering was continuous. At the 75 yards Champion gained a very slight advantage, and the two men started the last 25 yards with Champion a trifle in the lend, and Hamilton and Fitzpatrick some 7or 8 yards behind. On the swim home Chin mp ion slightly improved his advantage, and amid great excitement won a magnificent race. Champion and Tyler were loudly cheered for their splendid exhibition, and a similar compliment was paid to Hamilton and Fitzpatrick for their plucky swimming. Time, CCsec."
