CRICKET.

_y —_ RETURN OF THE AUCKLAND TEAM.

The Auckland representative cricket team returned from their Southern tour by the s.s. Moura this morning and were met on the wharf by Mr G. H. Broughton, hon. secretary of the Auckland Cricket Association, and other followers of the game. The results of the tour were disastrous, the team being decisively beaten in all four of the matches played; but, apart from the cricket programme, they had an enjoyable tour and were hospitably treated by the Southerners. The most discouraging feature in connection with their failure was the extraordinarily bad Welding which marked the team's display in the field throughout the tour. "If even half the catches offered had been taken," remarked one of the; team tfiis morning, "I believe our record would have been a creditable one." Another disappointing feature was that most- of the men who were expected to do well failed lamentably, while the team's luck was "out" all through the tour. Their bowling' proved a' constant source of weakness. According to the captain (Mr Ohlson), Wellington was about the strongest team they met, and Midlane, the young Wellington "colt," was the soundest batsman, though not so stylish as Clarke (Wellington) or Hannah (Canterbury). Of the bowlers Dent (Hawke's Bay) and Pisher I (Otago) were about the-best.
