SPECIAL GRANTS

The Education Department has pratpared regulations under the Manual and Technical Instruction Act, 1900, controlling authority to repeive froni the public fund a. capitation of three halfpence for every attendance of ft pupil over thirteen years old at tlie continuation of the class, that is the class commencing not earlier than 4 p.m. The grants to be given, for special subjects in school classes include one shilling per head per annum for modelling, etc., in standard two, and sixpence per head for kindergarten work; two shillings per head for modelling, brush, wire and basket work, etc., in standards three and four; two and sixpence for modelling, drawing, painting, carving, etc., iv classes not lower than standard five; two and sixpence for each pupil in or above standard five who shall have received not less than twenty lessons in first aid and ambulance (boys), first aid and nursing (girls), cottage gar* dening, swimming, and life saving; ten shillings per annum for each boy who has undergone thirty weeks' in- 1 struction of two hours weekly in wood or ironwork; ten shillings per annum for each girl who has received not less than forty hours' instruction in cooking and dairy work during the yeac (for both courses, fifteen shillings); five shillings for each girl who has had twenty hours at laundry work, or forty hours at dressmaking; two and sixpence for each pupil who has had not less than forty hours elementary agriculture, physics or chemistry. For buildings for schools and special classes established by a Board of Education the whole costs may be granted for the buildings; for associated classes controlled by Boards, twothirds of the cost; for all other classes, half cost. Grants for material may cover whole cost in case of school classes, or classes for teachers and !n» structors for other classes. They shall not in general exceed two-thirds of the cost.

The Minister is empowered to establish scholarships for competition among pupils attending any of tha classes under the Act.
