Sir,—Dr. Bakewell has made a great mistake about Kruger und the two republics, Kruger is certainly not one of the ablest politicians living. He has only the conceited cunning of the savage. And there never were two republics in South Africa. The Governments of Kruger and of Steyn were the very opposite of republics—were, In fact, close tyrannical despotisms. Many! especially iv America, have been grossly deceived by the misnomer.—l am, etc., W.E.S.
