PONSONBY ANNUAL REGATTA,
A meeting- of the Ponsonby Regatta Club was held last evening-, when entries were received for the regatta next Saturday. Good entries were received for the sailing* races, but none were received for the g_g' rowing events, owing* to a dispute with the Northern flowing Union. The Union had written to the Regatta Secretary protesting against the lowering of j the prize-money for the rowing races, and submitting that a change should be made as follows: —Maiden g"ig(undei* lOst), maiden gigs (open), junior gigs (under lOst), junior gigs (open), and senior gigs (open), the first prize to be .7 7/, and second £1 1/ in each event. All entries were now ready, but would be held back until the' Regatta Club forwarded a definite reply. A reply had been forwarded by the Ktegatta Committee Chairman 'and Secretary to the effect that they very strongly objected to the tone of the Union's communication, which contained a threat to coerce the Club in reference to the funds at its disposal, and stating that entry night would be held as advertised. If was decided to support the action of (he Chairman and Secretary in the matter. Owing to the rowing clubs not entering for the races, it was decided, in order to complete the programme, to place races for crews from the warships in port, merchant ships' p-ig-s, and a special race for crews from the steamers of the Northern Steamshin Company.
