Mildura goes into the Calliope Dock next week. Artillery volunteers at shot and shell practice this afternoon. The fancy fair at St. Marys Convent, Ponsonby, will closo to-night. Mr H. Conn-ll's annual concert will be held in St. Sepulchre's Schoolroom next Thursday evening. The Napier-street public school concert is to be repeated next Tuesday, evening in the Opera House. Express parcels and letter delivery by special messenger service will come into operation on January 1. Telegrams for all the stations in the interior of Columbia can now* be accepted, with restriction at the sender's risk. Mr Theo. Cooper and Rev. H. ,T. A drowning accident occurred in Lake Brunner yesterday, a young man named Bansfield being the victim. He was in a dingey, which upset. Another man who was with him was saved.
The Government propose, in connection With the steam service to South. Africa,' that the steamers shall leave New Zealand every six weeks, and call at Fremantlc (W.A.) on the voyage. \ The Hon. J. G. Ward paid a visit to the studio of Mr. Allen Hutchinson, sculptor, at Mount Roskill, yesterday, and inspected Mr. Hutchinson's bust and model for a statue of Sir George Grey. A conference of Te Aute students, past and present, is being held at Putiki Pa, just outside the town. Amongst those present are: Archdeacon Williams, Mr Thornton (principal), and Mr.Ngata (Auckland). When cycling down Grey-street yesterday Mr. Harkin struck* a boulder which should not have been there, and fell heavily. He fortunately escaped without any bones being broken, but his cycle was badly damaged. It was stated at a meeting of the North Canterbury Wesleyan -Methodist Sunday School Union, that 1800 scholars and teachers were expected to take part in the Jubilee SundaySchool demonstration in the Exhibition Hall, on the-afternoon of December -16 ■ ;> ' . ■
