Fifty thousand pounds worth of property, owned by Chinese suspected of ■; being concerned in outrages upon foreigners, was destroyed by the Kalgan expedition, which otherwise proved ineffective, only three unimportant officials being executed, the charge against them being that they were among the instigators of the Tsinang massacre. The German detachment has been sent to Kalgan again, with a big force of regulars at Tangchor.
The Bussians atNeuchang have imposed a land tax of 3 per cent, upon Chinese landholders.
