The Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court were continued to-day. Evidence in the charge of cattle stealing at Aratapu preferred against Wm. Henry Palmer was further heard. Counsel addressed the Court, and.His Honor summed up the evidence in the whole case. At 20 past one o'clock the jury, retired to consider their verdict, and they had not returned to Court at 3 o'clock. In the afternobn a charge against Whio Tariera and Tera Putiki, of theft of a cow on 28th June last, the property of Wm. H. Laycock,. occupied the attention of His Honor and a jury. The case against Ehrman is not likely to be taken to-morrow. Mr Lambton L. Mount left in the s.s. Moana for America to purchase machinery for the New Zealand Glass Company, Limited. Mr Arthur Aitken has been nominated for the North Ward of the Auckland City Council by Mr J. C. Macky, of Macky, Logan, Sieen and Co., and Mr S. McCpskrie, engineer. For the ensuing municipal election at Devonport Mr H. J. Baulf is again a candidate, having been nominated by Mr Alex. Harvey and MrT. E. Montgomery. The additions to the Art Gallery by erecting semi-partitions or cross walls in order to provide additional space for hanging pictures will be put in hand to-morrow morning. This will necessitate the closing of the Gallery until the work is completed next month. When the Gallery is re-opened several new pictures will be found on the walls, including two scenes in Venice, kindly presented by Mrs J. McCosh Clark a few weeks ago. Both are certain to be very much admired. Nominations for the election of councillors for the Grafton, East, North, South, Karangahape, and Ponsonby Wards close to-morrow at 12 noon. It is understood that there will be no contest in any ward, several aspirants having decided not to come forward on this occasion in A'jew of the possibility of an early retirement of the whole of the Council (under the new Local Autliorities Bill now before Parliament). Crs. Courtney (Ponsonby) W. B. White (Grafton)*, and Chas. Hesketh (North) are not seeking reelection, the new candidates being re- | spectively Messrs John Court, G. Aickin and Arth-_ Atkin.
