A FATAL FALL.

A SAILOR KILLED,

,At four o'clock yesterday morning a most distressing accident occurred at the Thames Hotel, Mrs Luks licensee. . A young man named Jeremiah Harrington, aged 23,' a stoker on H.M.S. Porpoise, losing- his life by falling from a third storey window1. Deceased came ashore on '^liberty," with three mates, about half-past one on Saturday afternoon. Very little is known of his movements up to bedtime when, it appears, he went with his mates to the hotel for the night, as their leave did not expire till Sunday morning. They were g-iven beds in a room on the third storey, the window being on the angle of the building facing Queen and Custom-streets. Mr Luks, the. night porter at the hotel, while sitting on duty in his room saw an object flash past his window from above. On going outside he found Harrington lying on the pavement with a frightful gash on his forehead. His ■nose was broken and the unfortunate r?:a.i|or had evidently (fallen on his forehead as Dr. King, who was called in, found that neither his arms nor his legs were broken. It was also found that he was suffering from internal injuries.

Harrington was taken to the hospital by the police, where, he was attended to by the staff. From the outset no hope was entertained of his recovery and he died about six o'clock last evening.

As to his falling out of the window, it is thought that he either got up to get some fresh air or that he was walking in his sleep. The window was a small One and he must have raised it considerably to get out. His mates knew nothing of the accident until informed of it.

Deceased is said to be a native of Ireland, and has been some four years in the service.
