ALLEGED THEFT.
CULLEN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL,
At the Police Court to-day Oswald Mark Cullen was charged with having, on August 6th, stolen the sum of £34, the property of Walter Lewis, butcher, of Victoria-street.
Chief Detective Grace appeared for the prosecution. Prisoner was undefended. .;.■. .7 *..-.'
Walter Lewis deposed that accused had been in his employ about, three years. On August 6th he gave accusedthe sum of £50 16/3.in nq'tesj gbl'd, sil? ver and two cheques, to deposit.in the Union Bank." There was about ..£25 in gold, and £9 or £10 in notes. Accused left the shop ostensibly to go to the bank, witness giving liim a deposit slip. Accused, when he returned, handed witness back the deposit-slip, but not the bank book, saying it would be made up by the following Wednesday afternoon. Witness filed the slip without noticing it much. Next morning accused did not. come to work, and enquiries at the Union Bank resulted in Avitness laying an information and obtaining a warrant for the arrest of accused. The deposit-slip which witness put on his file was missing on the morning of the 7th, and he had not seen it since.

Henry Newbold, teller in the Union Bank, deposed that accused banked £16 16/3 on behalf of the accused—, £4 in notes, £2 in silver, £10 16/3 in/ cheques, no gold—on August 6th. ' > Constable Cahill. deposed to bringl'ff accused back from Sydney, where' he had been arrested on the pr&ent charge. Accused, when arrested-''had in his possession £9 in B.N.Z./ 1otes» £2 in silver ahd £22 in gold. / Accused, who reserved his J.ef ence, was committed for trial a/ the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed in two, sureties of £100 each. / '
