CITY ABATTOIRS

REPORT OF SANITARY COMMISSIONERS.

Dr. J. M. Mason, M.D., and Mr J. A. Gilruth, M.R.C.V.S., Sanitary Commissioners, reported regarding the city abattoirs as follows: —We beg to draw your attention to the insanitary state in many respects of the city abattoirs. For the work of supervision and cpiioral clearing up. one man is absolutely insufficient. Tin1 pig styes are too close to the slaughterhouse sheds; they are overcrowded, the floors are broken in many places., and we recommend that they should be abolished. The offal should be removed at night instead of as at present left in the trench until morning-. The buildings, especially the floors, require renovating, and immediate steps should be taken to destroy the large number of rats which at present infest, the buildings, and which under present circumstances constitute a standing menace to the health of the people of Auckland. The report was referred to the Abattoir Committee to report as to cost, etc.

Cr. Parr said the committee should also take into consideration whether or not it was possible to move the abattoirs altogether. Building was steadily passing- towards the abattoirs and in the interests of public health and the purity of the water supply slaughtering should be abolished

there. HEALTH OFFICER'S REPORT. Dr. F. M. King, city health officer, reported that the pan system lad now been introduced to many houses he had visited during the past fortnight, but many complained about the pans being too small. He also recommended that all stables should have concrete or concrete and .block floors. FIFTEEN BUILDINGS CONDEMNED. In a further report Dr. King stated that in company with Dr. Baldwin he visited the following premises and condemned the houses named: —

1. Premises occupied as stables by S. Tilly and owned by Mr Davies, of Upper Queen-st. 2. House occupied V,y _, Murphy, and owned by Mr Hammond, situated in Upper Queen-st. 3. Premises occupied by Mr ITeJghton in Wellesley-st., and owned by Messrs Brown, Barrett and Co. 4. Premises, stables and shed owned and occupied by Mr Phillips. Swanson-st. 5. Premises occupied by Mr Heslop, Hobsonst. '.owned by Building Society (this building should be made sanitary to the Board's satisfaction). 6. Stables occupied by Mr Broady and owned by him in Durham-st. 7. Cottage occupied by Mrs Lloyd, Drake-st., and owned by Mr Kalph Keesing. 8. Cottage occupied by Mrs McEwan and owned by Mr Ralph Keesing. 9. Cottage occupied by Mrs Maher and owned by Mr Ralph* Keesing. 10. Cottage, Centre-st.. owned by Mrs Dervan. 11. Cottage, Vernon-st., owned by Mrs Dervan. 12. Cottage, Adelaide-st., owned by Mrs T)ervan. 13. Cottage owned by Misses McVeigh in Cook-st., corner of Centre-st. 14. Empty Cottage, Centre-st,, Cook-st. 15. Stable, Baker-st., owned by Miss Matson.

Dr. King added that the buildings ■were in a bad state of repair and he had given the Town Clerk the necessary certificates under the Municipal Corporations Act.
