An ordinary meeting- of the Borough Council was held last night, whe,n the following were, present:—The Mayor (Mr. J. H. Greenslatle), Crs. Eadfoi-rl, Ponlg-rain, Foy, Menzics, Lneas, Davey, Trembath, a.iul Wood.
The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the Council then wont into committee to ■consider sanitary matters. A. report from ,the Foreman of Works on the night soil and dust removing- contracts, was. read by the Town Clerk, after which a lengthy discussion followed. It was decided that the dustcarts visit all the side streets; that a. list of those persons who do not make. uses' of the night-soil service be obtained, and that they be no:i:i.e-l flint; they must avail themselves of it, and in the event of refusal, the Couno.il to prosecute; to prohibit butchers boiling down fat within the borough; and to cancel all existing- permits to dn po. The attention of the contractor is to be called to the acJing-Foreman's complaint- that deodorising- soil is not supplied to residences. The~Foreman is instructed to give his attention to sanitary matters for the present, and that to enable him to do so he is authorised to engage extra labour. A committee. consisting of Crs. Wood, Poulgrain. and Lucas was chosen to ejrfer with the Comity Council and *foe Harbour Board as to the advisability and best means of exterminating- ihe rat*.
After the reports of the Turncocc :.uul the Foreman of Works had been read, the Finance Committee's report was received and adopted, and various accounts passed for payment. The Council then rose, the sitting having been a very lengthy one.
