DREDGING CLAIMS.
DUKEDIN, this day,
! A number of .applications for mining licenses for portions of the Taieri River were objected to by the Railway Department on the grounds that the areas were within five chains of the : river boundary of the railway reserve. ; The claims are in Mount Allan district, | where the reserve boundary is the edge |of the river, and the five chains limit j takes in the complete width of the river. The applications were adjourn'od for a month to see if an arrangement cannot be reached. The Depart- . ment.'s action is the result of fear that dredging operations will undermine . the railway embankment.
