PETITIONS OPEN.

The attention of young people, and those interested in them is drawn to the ohildren'ia portion of the "New Zealand Graphic." Two pages of eacb issue are devoted to the interests of children, and certainly they are not the least amusing a-nd entertaining of the forty-eight of which this weekly, magazine is composed. The pages, which are brightly illustrated and filled with capital stories, and descriptions of new games, and various mat* ters of interest to children, are under the charge of a writer using the norn de plume of Cousin Kate Cousin Kate invites letters from any child under the age of sixteen. The letters are printed in the "Graphic," usually with the signature of the Christian name only, week by week, together with a brief answer from Cousin Kate. It is. wonderful how keenly children delight in writing to a somewhat mystical person, who never scolds over spelling or is captious about blots, but who seems to enter into all their pleasures and sorrows as one of themselves. Under such circumstances youngsters write lav more freely than in a school essay, and develop an originality of expression and thought often amusing and sometimes amazing-. Parents would do well to encourage children to write such letters, and Cousin Kate, of the "Graphic," will be delighted to welcome any number of new correspondnets, and em'ol them amongst the "Graphic" cousins Prizes are now open for competition by children for Ist the best map of New Zealand; 2nd, for the best short story; 3rd, for tie best colouring in crayons or paint of any picture in any issue of the "Graphic." Any child may-enter for these competitions. The maps may be those drawn in school, or children may draw them specially. This closes on May Ist. The painting competition closes on April 16th. Children may cut out and colour any picture in any issue of the "Graphic." and, as most children delight to do, colour it as seems them best. There is mo entrance fee for these competitions; neither need the competitors be regular subscribers to the paper. Children may enter for one only or all three. The prizes will be selected with regard to the age. sex, and probable taste of the winners. It is intended shortly to give a prize for the best letter.

Children wishing to enter for competitions, or to write letters to Cousin Kate have nothing to do biitpost their letter, their map. their story, or their picture. He., etc.. to Cousin Kate, "New Zealand Graphic" office, Auckland.
