LICENSING COMMITTEE.

TO-MO UROW'S CONTEST

The election of a Licensing Committee of live for the City of Auckland for the next three years takes place to-morrow (Wednesday). The electoral rolls for the district are used at the election. Considerable local interest centres in the contest, the cpiestion at issue between the licensed victuallers and the prohibition party being eleven o'clock versus ten o'clock licenses for hotels. There are five polling places, viz.: The Drill Shed (principal), Rutland street; St. James' Hall, Wellington street; Ponsonby Hall, Jervois Road; St. George's Hall, Great North Road; St. Benedict's Hall, Gladstone street, Newton. The hours of polling are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

It may be mentioned that the City ot Auckland Licensing District roughly includes a line from Stanley street across the Domain, taking in Park Avenue, and extending along tbe Kaipara railway line to Shaddock street. Excluding Eden Terrace, the line extends along the Great North Road, taking in the whole of Grey Lynn and Ponsonby. The water frontage in this area, is from the Parnell side of Mechanics' Bay to the far side of Cox's Creek.

The following persons have, with their consent, been duly and regularly nominated as candidates to serve on the City Incensing Committee:— Graves Aickin, Enoch Pond, Ma.urice Casey, Peter Edward Cheal, Joseph James Craiff, William Craig, Thomas Taylor Masefleld, James Milne Mennie, John Patterson, Artliur Rosser, Robert Tudehope, John Henry Upton.

An impression prevails that only ratepayers can vote, but this is erroneous. Every citizen entitled to vote in a Parliamentary election, is entitled to vote, in the election of a licensing committee to-morrow.

The amount of correspondence on to-morrow's election which has cjme to hand during the course of to-day is so considerable that with the pressure now on our space we are unable to afford it room, and have perforce to disallow discussion tit this late hour on either side of the question.—Ed. E.S.

In accordance with the Licensing Act all hotels in the city electorate will be closed to-morrow between. 12 noon and 7 p.m.

The Returning Officer has made complete arrangements for the election-, lie requests deputies and poll clerks to be in attendance at the Drill Hall this evening between S and 9 io'cloek to complete details.
