PORT ALBERT SHOW.

The thirty-first annual show was held on Friday, March 9. Neither in number or quality of exhibits was the show equal to many previous ones. There-were a lai-ge number of settlers and visitors from surrounding districts present. Several reasons were given why there was a falling off in number of exhibits: The long drought, of course, was one reason why the entries in field, piroduce and fruit ! classes did not come up to several past shows. One speaker at the evening ' meeting said there were now so many I shows that it was difficult to sustain the interest in these annual exhibiI lions. The evening- meeting in the j Temperance Hall was pleasant and j entei-taining. the big hall being full, itr R. Monk, M.H.1.., presided.. He ; referred to the many advantages deI rived from these annual shows and i gatherings, and during the evening's programme he also, in eloquent language, spoke of the present war. His | fervid loyalty found unanimous symI pathy and approval by the large audience rising at his request and heartily singing "Rule Britannia." Two of the judges, Messrs Hall and Anderson, ; made short but - kindly speeches. Messrs W. Armitage and G. Nicholson took the lead in the musical part of the programme, as on many previous similar gatherings. Miss ■ Hefford, Miss May Budding, Miss Armitage and a lady visitor from Auckland (Miss Butler) gave considerable pleasure. Their songs wei;e well rendered. Mr B. M. Gubb w^as a good secretary for the show, and he had an efficient staff of honorary helpers in Messrs G. B. Reid, G. T. Hartnell, E. Marcroft, G. I Thompson and others. In the industrial class Mesdames Reid, Hartnell, Gubb, Becroft, Booth kindly gave their services. On the motion of Messrs J. Shepherd -and T. A.
