HIBERNIAN SPORTS.

After we went to press on Satui--1 day afternoon the following events were decided at the Hibernian Society s St Patrick's Day sports in the Domain Cricket Ground: — i 100 Yards Flat Race (open).-The 'final was won by H. Gladding (,y^), with McCarthy (siyds) second and J. Donovan (9yds) third. I For the Irish Jig Competition theie were eight entries. H. Follas' dancing- was adjudged the best, and he was awarded first prize, with J. Goonan second. ~ Friendly Societies' Handicap.— moCabe (9yds) won easily, R. J- J°s'ce (12yds) being second and A. Collins ! (lOvds) third. I I*so Yards Handicap Race—l his !event resulted: C. E. "McCarthy (7yds) jl, T. George (9yds) 2, McCabe (syds) 3. i Thi« event was run in heats. The .final was very closely contested, McCarthy just managing to take first j St. Patrick's Handicap (for H.A.C.B. 'members only).—J. Donovan (7yds) 1, ;R. Keenan (scr) 2. Amongst the parishes which mustered largest in the children's procession was St. Benedict's. In the morning mass was celebrated in St. Benedict's Church, and a special feature was the excellent singing by the children of hymns appropriate to the occasion. Miss T. V. Coffey was at the organ during the mass. The following were the Societies and schools which took part in the pro-

cession: —

Hibernian A.C.B. Society (sixty members), with the following District officers: District President, Bro. D. O'Sullivan; District Vice-President, Bro. M. O'Sullivan; District Secretary, Bro. W. Kane; District Treasurer, Bro. M. J. Sheahan. Auckland branch officers; President, Bro. Stead; VicePresident, Bro. Callaghan; Treasurer, Bro. D. Flynn. This Society, which bore its large and handsome banner affile head of the procession, w-as followed by the Juvenile branch of the Society/also carrying a beautifud banner adorned with the National emblems.

St. Patrick's Catholic Schools.—This portion of the procession which numbered several hundreds, was in charge of the local Christian Doctrine Society, besides whom the parish priests and the Sisters exercised a general supervision.

Marist Bros. School-boys.— This school was in charge of the Rev. Bro. Basil (Superior), and Bros. Edmund and Jerome.

Itoman Catholic Orphanage, Lake Takapuna.—Over 50 boys were present from this institution, under the care of ( Sister Mary Alphonsus and Mr Colgan.

Ponsonby Catholic Schools (St. Mary's Convent, St. Mary's Orphanage, and Church of the Sacred Heart). —This portion of the procession was an excellent feature, there being a very large attendance. The Rev, Dr. Egan was in charge, assisted by Mrs Hicks, and a number of young ladies of the Church and .Convent.

St. John the Baptist (Parnell).— The children of this parish attended in large numbers, a considerable number being in brakes. The Rev. Father Kehoe was in charge. St. Benedict's (Newton) and St. Joseph's (Surrey Hills).—Some 500 or COO attended from these districts, under the supervision of the Eev. Father W. T. C. Darby, and the members of the Christian Doctrine Society. The children c-f St. Patrick's parish schools were under the charge of the following members of the local Christian Doctrine Society: Mr J. Carrigan, Misses Gough (2), Tuohy, Ready, Rist, Xeenan, Downs, Lonergan, McCabe, Waters (2), Grace, Oar-rig-an (2), Messrs Thorne and _T. Ford.
