VOLUNTEER NOTES.

The Victoria Rifles No. 1 on Saturday afternoon fired for medals presented by Lieut- Cox (for "A" class shots), Captain Skinner (for "B" class), and Lieut. Cox (for "C" class). The first competition was wron by Private Carlson, the second by Private Exton (who retains the medal as his own property, having already Avon it once), and the third by Private T. Kerr. The firing took place at Mt. Eden, at the 300 yds and 500 yds ranges. Scores.— "A" Class: —Private Carlson 50 (out of a possible 56); Sergeant Kretschmar 47; Private Tobin 46; Private Exton 46. Several others also fired. In reference to the formation of a second mounted infantry or cavalry j corps in this city, the Hon. W. Jen-1 nings, at the request of a number of, men in the town, telegraphed to the Bight Hon. the Premier, Defence Mm- j ister, the advisability of establishing j a second mounted corps. The Premier replied to the effect that when application comes and names are sub- j mitted, the matter will be considered and then be dealt with. j Last week a meeting w ras held an; Ohaupo Hotel, the object, being to! enrol members for the Waikato, Mounted Infantry. Eight young men j were sworn in as members of the No. 1 Company. This will make sixteen young- men living in and around Ohaupo who have joined, making sec- J tions to'work with, so that there will: be a sufficient number there to puS. in ordinary drills without going to, Hamilton except 'on special occasions.
