LAWN TENNIS.
Messrs Simpson (Parnell) and Best. (Devonport), who were drawn together in the first round of the Gentlemen's Championships, played off on Saturday at the West End Courts, when Mr Simpson won. 6 — 2, 6 —3, S —6. The light was good and the ground, notwithstanding a. few showers, played very true. The match itself was a good one, and was much closer than the scores indicate.
The West End Courts, which have been played on a good deal this season, have stood the test admirably, the first three being particularly good. The Club is at present engaged running off a tournament, which is exerting keen interest'amongsi the players. Next Saturday, I believe, has been set aside foiva match with Parnell, and shortly after that they intend, tryinoconclusions with Devonport. Tennis has been a little on the wane this, season, and the West End Committee is to be congratulated upon the steps which it intends taking, and which should effectually revive interest in the grand old game.
