BETHULIE OCCUPIED
ENEMY LOSING GKOUND
LONDON, March 10,
General Gataere, with 4000 men, at Bethulie expelled the Boers, who are retreating northwards.
[Bethulie is twenty miles north-east of Norval's Pont, in Free State territory.]
In connection with the advance to Bethulie, the British officers faced the enemy-and-.daringly removed the connecting wires, rendering the mines placed under the Bethulie waggon bridge, abortive.
Captain Grant, of the Engineers, extracted explosives from holes hi the Bethulie bridge, Major Shaw, Lieut. Pop-ham and some Derbj-shire heroes removingl the wires.
The New South Wales Ambulance meanwhile showed great gallantry during* the shelling-.
Major-General Polr fnrew, with 2000 Guards and two guns, entrained at Bloemfontein, and lias passed Bethany, ?.o miles by rail to the south, unopposed.lle joins Generals Gatacre and Clements. The latter has SOOO, and General Brabant 3000 men.
[The total British force operating on the Cape Colony border, when strengthened by the Guards Brigade, will be 17.000.]
