E. H. Hardy.—This case, heard before Mr Bush, was a claim for return of certain gold specimen or £2o value and £2 damages. Mr Geo. Cruickshank appeared for plaintiff, and Mr C. R. Walker for de(fendant. The plaintiff alleged that defendant, who was representing a Home syndicate, had borrowed the gold in 1897 to show to some millingfriends, and, without plaintiff's permission, has sent it to Scotland for the purpose of furthering- the notation of the plaintiff's property, the Standard claim. Defendant, on the other hand, swore that plaintiff had given the gold to him to send Home, it being the usual custom for flotation of properties to send specimens of quart/ therefrom to the people at Home. It was shown that plaintiff was to reap considei-able advantage from the flotation of his mine, while defendant gained no appreciable benefit. The Thames United Foresters will hold an athletic carnival at Dod's Paddock, Parawai, on Easier Monday. The programme includes six bicycle races, five pedestrian events, and two competitions for lire brigades. Entries for all events close with Bro. E. Nordon at the Auckland Cycling Club's rooms, Upper Pitt-street, or with Mr A. C. Bae, secretary, Pollenstreet, Thames, on Saturday evening-, March 31st. A cheap excursion will be run from Auckland on the day of the sports.
