CALENDAR OF GARDEN OPERATIONS—MARCH 16.
TO CORRESPONDENTS. Improving Light Soils (Amateur).—You should, if possible, only use cow manure, as it will help to bind the soil and make it more retentive. You could also obtain stiff clay and mix in with the soil. The best time to add the clay is now, when you are working the soil for autumn cropping. Best Soil for Strawberries (B.B.). — The best soil for strawberries is a retentive loamy one, which should be laboured as deeply as possible, and plenty of litter manure placed therein. As you are not to grow for the market, you should specially prepare a small patch this autumn by trenching and manuring it. Next year you could prepare another portion, and so on till the whole garden is trenched. You will find that all classes of garden crops will succeed best upon trenched soil.
