MAY QUEEN RETURN.
£944 FROM 591 TONS
During the past month the May Queen of Hauraki Company treated 591 tons of ore for a return of 343 ozs. 1 dwt. of gold value £944 1/8. This is the result of 21 actual working days operations. At the mine in the May Queen section the No. 7 level has reached the junction of the No. 4, and north-west lodes thus securing excellent ventilation. At the junction the combined thickness of the two ore bodies is about 3ft and the whole of the ore is being forwarded to the battery for treatment. The drive is now being pushed ahead along the junction and payable ore is being secured. The whole of the water in the May Queen section, which, formerly ran along No. 6 level, now finds its way through the reefs and winzes down to No. 7 level, from whence it is being raised back to No. 6 level by means of a 9in Cameron pump, which is being worked from eight to nine hours per day, including Sundays. The Saxon. No. 1 reef is a fine compact body of heavily mineralised ore, about 18in. thick, and when the junction is reached, Mr Park anticipates that payable gold will be met with. At No. 6 level stoping is still being carried on upon the Cardigan Nos. 1 and 2 reefs, and the ore coming to hand is of a highly payable character.
Tributers in the May Queen of Hauraki mine during the past four weeks crushed 37J tons of ore for a return of bullion worth £747 16/3. Of the total amount, 2140Z lOdwt was won by Messrs Riley and party of 18 men, heing the result of seven weeks' work upon the Cardigan reef above No. 4 level.
