CHAMPION- STAKES DAY.

Fine weather prevails and the course, is in good order. Not more than five starters are expected to go to the post for the Champion' Stakes. Withdrawals are clue half an hour before the. time appointed for the starting of the race.
A pleasant evening- W as spent last night at the Ellers»lie Hotel. Several | residents of. the district assembled to (present their host with a, handsome gold sovereign ease as .a mark of their appreciation of the way in which he has conducted his hotel' for five j-ears. Mr Barter. J.Pi, was unanimously elected chairman, and in a very neat speech regretted that.Mr Pickrell, the landlord, had decided to leave this hotel. However he informed the company that Mr PickreH would be met by them, he hoped, on maliy occasions, as he was only removing to the rising district of Penrose. Many i present expressed themselves in a pleasant way, saying they had always found Mrs Piclu*ell the very ideal of a good landlady, and hoped that the rest she was now seeking' from business would do her good., After a good mauy. toasts had been honoured, including the Queen, under whom Mr Pickrell had the honour oi serving many years (21 in the Eoyal Engineeis) the remainder' of the evening was devoted to song and narmony.
