CAMBRIDGE NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

CAMBRIDGE, Monday.

The volunteering spirit is now rampant in this district, and the young fellows are rolling up in force. On Saturday evening 10 recruits joined the Mounted Rifles here, and I know, of several who could not attend ton that evening, so there will be a respectable number ere long1. Owing to some informality on the previous occasion the election of a captain was again made, when the choice unanimously fell upon Mr J. R. S. Richardson. A large number of the Volunteers went to Auckland this morning- to see the Rough Riders off, and a couple went to join the reserve. So many young men are leaving the Waikato that the girls are beginning to inquire what is to become of- them, and one courageous female suggested to me the other day that a corps of female volunteers should be formed. Not a bad idea that. I am sure some of them would fight just as well as some of the boys, for I know girls in this district that can work in the bush, plough and fence with some of the best of the males; and, notwith^ standing the above accomplishments, can be as gentle and ladylike as those who have only attended to their household duties. Talk about the send-off to the Rough Riders!—it will be nothing to the display when "The Amazons of the Waikato" embark to join their lads in South Africa. ' - ... :

On Saturday the Te Awamutu cricketers came over here and had a friendly contest with our club. The home team went under badly, only scoring S7 to their opponents' 143, of which the Bowden family made more than half.
