THE CROWD AT THE FIRE.
(To the Editor.)
Si r) _l s the Auckland bobby as useless an individual as he seems? At the fire on Thursday night the police in Quay street allowed the mob to gradually press forward from, a line about 20 feet from the breastwork to a line only about 20 feet from the burning- building-. What would have been the result if the front wall, instead of, or in addition to, the rear wall had come down with a run? , It might be said that there was no danger of such an occurrence, but it is very often the unexpected which happens, and, in any case, the firemen Avere impeded. The Auckland police never have a mob under control. The one on Thursday night was as orderly a concourse of people as you would find, even in any church, in Christendom, and to have kept them back to the original line, so as to leave all the leads of hose, the hydrants, and the reels entirely unhampered, would have been as easy as falling off a log. • —I am, etc.,
