SCHOOL OF MINES.
I The annual meeting of the members of the Coromandel School of Mines was held on Wednesday evening, Capt. | .Kenrick, vice-president, being in the! ! chair. The financial report showed a credit of £9 6/. The report stated that ' in spite of the mining depression the j 1 attendance proportionately increased, 1 and the school is more permanent than previously. The Council acknowI ledged the success as mainly due to !Mr Jas. McLaren, the late director, and to Mr Peter J. MacLeod, his successor; also to Mr A. J. Litten and the Rev. C. F. Harrison, for the voluntary superintendence of the mathematical and mechanical drawing classes respectively. A gratuity of £10 was vot|ed to Mr W. Thomas, the hon. secre- ! tary. The Council • commended the i institution to the general public as ' being worthy of more financial sup- : port. The directors report stated there were 30 students on the roll. At ; the annual School of Mines examinaI tion, held in December, half of the stu--1 dents presented themselves for examination, and secured 14 first class eerti- ; ficates, eight second class, and one third class. A presentation of a written testimonial was made to Mr McLaren, late director, signed by all members of the Council. The certificates for successful scholars were also presented. The following officers were elected for the year:—President, The Hon Jas. McGowan, M.H.R.; vicepresidents, Captain Hodge and Capt. Kenrick; members of the Council, ! Messrs A. N. Jamieson, T. W. Rhodes, IW. Moorecroft, H. F. Shepherd, ,T. Reilly, J. B. Rockliffe, and Wm. Jones; and Wm. Thomas, hon. secretary ana treasurer.
