MELBOURNE C.C. V. AUCKLAND.

OVERWHELMING VICTORY FOE THE VISITORS.

The match between the Melbourne Cricket Club's team and the Auckland eleven, which was concluded on

Saturday afternoon, proved a very one-sided game, the visitors winning by an innings and 385 run-.. Melbourne's score of 554 is the highest one-innings total ever recorded on tbe Auckland Domain. To this total the local team responded Avith 87 in their first essay, and 84 in the second innings. The attendance on Saturday afternoon, although better than on the previous days, was only moderate. From a financial point of view it was unfortunate that the Aucklanders had to bat. that afternoon, and that the game was so one-sided as never to leave the issue in tloubt. Had the Australians been tit the wickets, or had there been any uncertainty as to tbe result, the attendance on Saturday afternoon might have been much larger. As it was, the match certainly did not get the patronage it deserved, and the result is that the Auckland Cricket Association will be about C4O to the bad after paying all expenses.

Auckland commenced their second innings at half past two. Hay and G. Mills, as in the first innings, opened for Auckland, to the bowling of Trumble and Cave. Both batsmen started well, Mills getting Trumble to kg for 4 and Hay treating Cave in the same manner twice in successive overs. A single or two, and another leg hit for Mills brought IT up, and then Hay lost his wicket in trying to get Cave round to leg. 17 —I—9. Kallender, the next man, Avas bowled by a "yorke.j" from Cave, after scoring a single and a three. 21—2—4. Ike Mills joined his brother. Both played steadily, but when eleven runs had been added Cave bowled George Mills with a "bailer." 32—3— 12. Ohlson, who cnme next, was clean bowled by Trumble after scoring a single. 33 —4 —l. Stemson, the next man, succumbed to Trumble's first ball. 33—5—0. Elliott followed,, but after] scoring 1 was caught by Mailer off J Cave. 30 —G —l. At the afternoon tea i adjournment the score was 42 for 0 wickets. I. Mills 11 not out, Wynyard G not out. When play was resumed a double change of bowling was effected, Graham and Fry replacing Trumble and Cave. The batsmen appeared to rather relish the change, for both hit out freely at the newcomers. Graham's length was rather erratic at first, and six runs were scored of? his lirst over. Fifteen more wero

notched in quick time, and then Mills was clean bowled by Fry. 63—7—21. Mcßae was dismissed without scoring. He opened his shoulders to off-drive Graham, and sent the ball Avhizzing at a great pace straight into Aitken's hands at mid off. It was a stinging catch, but the fieldsman held it amidst loud applause. 70—S—0. W. Mills after scoring a couple was very neatly stumped by Ross off Graham. 72—9—2. Wynyard was now joined by Stephens, the last man, and between them they raised the score to 80. Four runs later Stephens' wicket was. cap!tired by Graham, tbe. innings thus closing for 84. Wynyard, who

carried his bat for 2"S, played a very serviceable innings, exhibiting some vigorous bitting. He leceived a nasty knock in the ribs during his innings, being struck by the ball. : The arrangements in connection with the match were carried out very satisfactorily by Mr G. 11. Broughton, hon. secretary of the Association. Scores are appended: MELBOURNE C.C.—lst Innings 554 AUCKLAND.—Ist Innings .87 AUCKLAND.—2nd Innings. Hay, b Cave <) G.
