GREYMOUTH LADIES CONTRIBUTION.
CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. A case of "Nightingales," made by the ladies of Greymouth, for ■ the use, ■ of the wounded in South Africa, arrived by the Rotoiti to-day, and was transhipped to the Knight Templar, for conveyance to Durban. ,<By Telegraph.—Press Association.) STRATFORD, Saturday. An enthusiastic meeting was held last night to consider the forming of a corps of mounted rifles.Mr Synies, M.H.R., explained that the Minister of Defence was willing to accept mounted rifles, but only in country districts. A resolution was carried to form a corps, and sixty-three names were handed in at once. A large proportion of those offering are farmers and farmers' sons. The opinion is expressed that the Government should also accept an infantry corps, and give townsmen an opportunity to get military training, A strong feeling was expressed that the Government be urged to accept both infantry and artillery corps. There are plenty of men' willing to join. Mr Symes promised to sound the Minister of De- . fence on the subject. Mr J. C. Bindon, of Hokianga, captain and owner of the s.s. Energy, has placed their steamer at the disposal jof a committee to arrange for an ex- ■■ cursioii on the Hokianga River in aid • of the War Relief Fund. The committee of the Rough Riders' Fund beg to acknowledge with thanks ; the donation of one set of boxing : gloves from Messrs IT. E.
