SWIMMING.
The Auckland Swimming Club opened the season with a. night gala at the ■Übert-street Baths on Wednesday last. There was a large attendance, and the sports were very successful. A. J. Johnston (Sisec) won the 72 lards New Year's Handicap, while the 108 Yards President's Handicap fell to W. T. Tyler (9sec), with P. J. Bailey (lOsec) second. F. A. Browne's win in the Plunge Handicap was in the nature of a surprise. Being a new man, he was given a handicap of G yards from J. Russell, but to the surprise of the spectators he succeeded in finishing little more than a foot behind the champion, who covered 53ft lOin. The Club intend holding a gala in one" of the Docks at an early date.
Cavill, Craig and Bishop, who among them hold all this year's interprovincial championships, owe their remarkable powers (says the "Bulletin") to the fact that they simply live in the water. Cavill hangs round his father's baths all day, flopping in and clambering out, seal-like, as the fancy seizes him. Bishop earned his sobriquet of "Mud" through floundering about the waters of Balmain at all tides and in all places every time a chance offered; and Craig allows no opportunity, at any time of day, to slip. Bishop and Craig hail from Balmain, as also do those other two cracks—Proudfoot and
Byers.
