An Imperial edict has been issued at Pekin proclaiming that the Emperor has appointed, Prince Pucktiin, aged. nine years, son of Tuan, who was son of the fifth son of Emperor Tao Hwang his heir. The Emperor has taken this step on account of ill-health.

Reuters Pekin correspondent states that the Emperor will probably abdicate at the beginning of the Chinese new year in accordance with the Dowage Empress's intentions. There is considerable opposition in Chinese court circles to the advent of a third minor under the Dowager Empress.
