A VISIT TO THE SYLVIA PARK STUD.

AMONG THE YEARLINGS. LB? HIPPONA.I This year the sale of the Sylvia Pari yearlings bred by .Messrs L. D. and N A. Nathan is fixed for Friday, Decern iber 29, the arrangements for theii disposal having, as usual, been placec in the hands of Messrs Hunter ant Nolan. This year's batch is not sc large as usual, only eight being catalogued for sale. I was one of a party who renewed acquaintance with tin young aristocrats a day or two ago. and found ihem to be a good all-round lot. The Sylvia Park stud has turned out a large number of winners during its existence, among the many being the following, viz., Sylvanus, Bit ol Fashion, La Dauphine, Sabretache, Miss Rose, Miss Emmy, Atlantic, Guardsman, Fabulist, St. Innis, Hylas. Miss Delaval, Hastings, Rainbow, Vi 7oodstock, Rosella, Bedding-ton, La Gloria and Explosion. The purchase of Seaton Delaval in England by Mr L. D. Nathan was a happy move, for this son of- Melton and Rosedale has proved himself an undoubted stud success. With four representatives running for him last season he put himself well up in the winning list, his progeny netting in stakes the good sum of £2076 17/. This season he promises to win high honours, for in Val Rosa and Beddington alone he has two representatives doing him great service, to say nothing of Miss Delaval, the C.J.C. Oaks winner. The Sylvia Park stud is rich in possession of brood mares, and mated as they now mostly are with the lovely blend of blood in Seaton DelavaPs veins some g-reat racehorses will no doubt be the result, I may say that Messrs Nathan's, fine stallion is in great heart at the present time, despite that he has just finished a heavy season. He has filled out and thickened considerably, and it is quite evident he is a horse who possesses a strong constitution. Probably the crack of the yearlings which go up for salo this year is a chestnut got by Seaton Delaval from Charente (dam of La Gloria, the winner of the Auckland Guineas). This is a fine big, determined fellow, wellgrown and possessing bone and substance. He is a capital walker in the paddock, and whoever secures him should have a racehorse. There is a lot to admire in a. chestnut filly by St. Hippo from Waitemata. She possesses plenty of length, liborty and all-round quality, and I would not be surprised to see her turn out a really good one. Waitemata, the mother of this filly, claims a beautiful pedigree, she being got by the recently defunct Eiridspord (imp.) from Aorere, by Chester from Kaipara, by Goldsb rough. A yearling colt, by St. Leger from Ellerslie, by Trenton, is full of promise. He is smart looking ia appearance and one who should come to hand early. In his dam's pedigree appears the name of Lady Greiiville. Dona, the dam of Dew#y, is a daughter of this mare, so the buj'er of this yearling- will have running blood to guide him. It must also not be forgotten that all the St. Legers race well. On breeding- grounds, a bay filly by St. Hippo from Maratea, by Nordenfeldt —Fishgirl, should be able to race. She is slightly dipped in the back, but both in front and behind she possesses galloping- conformation. For early racing she might prove a capital speculation. * liellona's yearling this year is a filly sired by St. Hippo, therefore a. full sister to Mr W. Grey's St. Lawrence. This mare is also the mother of Matamataharakiki, who ran such a close second to Zealous at the T.J.C. meeting. The juvenile under notice is brown in colour and very lengthy and strong. She also possesses good quarters. Another racy looking filly is a bay. by Seaton Delaval out of Leocant, by Leolinus from Cantiniere, by Musket. She is built on compact lines, and looks like being capable of doing a smart thing across the grass in the spring time. It can be claimed for the St. Hippo —Innisfail colt that he has plenty of size and good bone. His dam, a Nor-'

denfeldt mare, has produced St. Innis. The yearling colt by St. Hippo from Cantiniere, a full brother to Hylas, was at Whitford Park,, so I did not see him. Cantiniere is the dam of that good horse Woodstock, whom Geo. Wright declares one of the best he has trained. After looking over the yearlings the party strolled through the luxurious paddocks aud looked over the brood mares and foals. There are nine foals sired by Seaton Delaval, two by St. Leger, one by Hotchkiss, and one by St. Hippo. They are a splendid lot, and if Messrs Nathan have good fortune with the batch during the next twelve months they will have indeed some equine aristocrats to place .before racing men. A crack foal is the brother to Beddington. He is far better put together than his relative, but he will be the same colour. Another lovely foal is a full brother to* Miss Delaval, who was scampering about at the heels of his mother Campania. He is a gem of the first water. Charente's filly foal by Seaton Delaval is also full of promise. Last year Stepfeldt was mated with St. Leger, and the result, is the, best foal she has produced. It has plenty of size, and all round is well shaped. So pleased are her ftwners with the young aristocrat that Stepfeldt has again been mated with St. Leger this year. A filly by Hotchkiss—Sybil'ms a remarkably'fine one, but I did not care so much for Jadestone's foal by St. Hippo. This season the clam of Explosion has been mated with Hotchkiss. but next season it is proposed that she will once more, be mated with Cuirassier, so that another colt even better than the Auckland Cup favourite may result. Miss Gladys, by Cuirassier—Sybil also had a remarkably fine filly foal by Seaton Delaval at her side.

On the road home a visit was paid to "Van Diemen Lodge," Ellerslie Road, the natty training establishment of George Wright, where I renewed acquaintance with Explosion, Rosella, Beddington, Aleger, Hastings, Laetitia, Hipstone, . St. Amy, and a two-year-old gelding named Ambition, by St. Hippo—Nellie, dam of Van Dieman, the property of J. Gallagher, j the well known horseman attached [ to the stable. All .of Wright's team i looked pictures of health and condition, and it will, evidently not be his \ fault if his employers do riot bring ' grist to their mill at the Summer ! Meeting.
