A PERSONAL EXPLANATION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—On the occasion of my address to the electors of Parnell, which was fully reported in you issue of 2Sth November, I offered to explain to a committee of electors why my wife and family do not reside with me in Auckland, which is now my business headquarters. Having retired from the contest, I am not responsible to the electors, but it has been pointed out to me that the imputation may injure my reputation. In justice to myself I therefore ask permission to state through your columns, that my wife and daughter have been advised by their medical attendant that the Auckland climate would certainly and speedily prove fatal to them. Proof of this I am willing to furnish any one who takes a sufficient interest in my private affairs to require it, or who does not know me too well to be deceived by an unmanly attack wholly unsupported by facts. —I am, etc., THOS. M. STEPHENS. Parnell.
