ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND A.A. AND CO. SPORTS. The fortieth athletic carnival of tlie Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club was held in the Domain Cricket Ground on Saturday afternoon. The Weather was perfect, and the ground on which Mr Yates, the caretaker, had bestowed a groat deal of attention, was looking at its host. Tho attendance numbered about 3000. The duality of the sport was on the whole mediocre. A. R. D. Watson, a new runner, annexed the 100 yarns and 410 yards flat r_.ee. and finished second to G. \V. Smith in the 2.70 yards. Smith had an easy win in the 120 yards hurdles, for which only three star-tod. i The half mile was won by L. Mayson. I and the mile by r„ L. J-.eeson. In the mile walk McAffer, the ' Australasian champion, was rit.riunli.led for "brealf- : ing" in the last lap. and Dickey won unopposed. Madillj assailed his Australasian record of 130 ft i 2in for throwing the 161b hammer from a j nine feet circle, but only covered 127 ft I Gin. i The most successful of the cyclists was j F. C. I.wen. who scored three firsts—half j mile, ladies' bracelet (2 miles), and the iiA'e mile—thus winning the Club's Victor Ludorum trophy for the year. H. 11. Brook won the two mile Alliance championship of New Zealand. Pilkington fell some yards from the tape, when racing level Willi Brook. The Christchurch champion,*H. C. Thompson, competed in this and some of the other events, but without success. Tt was his first exjierlence of racing on a grass track, and he j did not seem to be at home on it. The sports were as Avell managed as usual, tho races being started punctually to time. Mr Austin Smith acted as starter. Messrs A.' H. Cotter and W. C. Speight as judges, the field judges being' Mr T. E. O'Connor. Mr G. Dunnett and Profesj sor Carrollo, and the judge of walking |Mr F. W. Coombes. The timekeepers were Messrs J, Marshall. F. MacManemin and G. Read; stewards, Messrs J. W. Winks and S. Someriield: press steward. Mr W. Mercer; and lap takers, Messrs W. Dickey and C . Waters; while Mr J. Miller officiated at the result board. Tho general arrangements were such as reflected credit on the lion, secretary, Mr F. J. Ohlson, ancl the committee, and Mr W. B. Eyre deserves a word of praise for his handicapping. Hunter's Band was in attendance during the afternoon.

In trie final Campbell led until entering the straight, when Smith and Watson shot ahead. A good race between these two resulted in Smith's favour by about six inches. Time, 275.

Two-mile Alliance Bicycle Championship of New Zealand.—H. H. Brook (Auckland). 1; H. A.' Coates (Waikato), 2; C. Henning (Auckland), 3. Also started: H. C. Thompson (Christchurch), G. .Henning. E. H. Cucksey and W. W. Pilkington (Auckland). The field were bunched until the last lap. the pace being anything but fast. About six hundred yards from home Thompson went to the i'ront. steering tube inside running for the last lap, with Cucksey close up and Pilkington third. The Christchurch ridei failed however to keep his lead, and dropped to the rear in the last lap. Cucksey led into the straight, Avhere Pilkington and Brook supplanted him and raced neck and neck for the taj>e. A few yards from home Pilkington. who was evidently "used up," wobbled and fell, ancl Brook got home tbe winner, Avith Coates close up second, and C. Henning a good third. Time. 5.37.
