The. hall '.was decorated with' ferns, and iv the I centre'was a fountain. Mr A. E. De- | voi'e, one of the patrons of the Society, ! addressed the assemoTy. He stated | that in the absence of Lord Eanfurly ;--who would have been happy to open ; the exliibiti.il but for his visit to Australia—he deemed it a ' privilege to take part in the proceedings of that evening.' The Society was "the oldestill the Australasian colonies, and most of the others followed modifications ,of its rules.- It had for years conduct- . Ed competitions which had spread a capacity and taste for art, and it had been the foremost organisation.in promoting art in Auckland. The Society had done much, but could do more if it.had more members antt more money. , He thought a committee of ladies • could go round among the citizens ■ and would accomplish that business. . They were indebted to Lady Ranfurly j for some of her own paintings, as well I as for a loan collection.
