NAUTICAL INQUIRY.
WELLINGTON, Nov. 16
Giving- evidence at the inquiry into the loss of the ship Pleiades, Captain Burton stated that he had made 16 voyages to New Zealand, and had eight times come up from the South to Napier. It was his first voyage, in the Pleiades. She had 589 tons of ballast on boaijl, as against 550 tons usually. He thought that the heavy weather and sea were the cause of the disaster. He did not think that anything "could have been done to save the ship. From the Monday afternoon she could not carry the canvas io take her off the land. The wind was blowing in shore throughout Monday, with a heavy sea. It was a hard gale with rain. When con-suiting his officers about running the vessel ashore the mate suggested dropiiing anchors, but he (witness) did not think this plan a safe one, the sea being too heavy. Had the vessel gone on to the reef he thought that all hands would have •perjshed. as no boat could have lived there. The Court reserved its decision till Thursday.
