At the Harbour Board meeting today, Mr F. W. Marchant, -engineer, reported that the breakwater was in a sound condition. The depths of water in the sheltered area show a gratifying increase over those existing last year. Over a considerable area there Was a depth of 10 to 12 feet at low water, where formerly sand stood ,3 feet above low water mark. Gradual and continued improvement may be regarded as. a dead certainty. WELLINGTON, this day. The poll on the City Council's proposal to borrow £5000 for the erection of a new fire brigade station was carried by 512 votes to 170. TIMARU, this day. The Hospital Board have difficulty in obtaining the assistance of an honorary visiting staff, only one medical man in town offering himself for appointment, and two being desired. The resident surgeon was instructed to make the best arrangement he can for extra assistance when necessary. WANGANUI, this day. The Wanganui A. and P. Show takes place to-day. There is a big increase in entries in all the principal classes. The total entries are over 1030, an increase of 300 as compared with lastyear. Wm. Melody, an old West Coaster, was found drowned in the Wangaehu River. He had been missing a fortnight. DUNEDIN, this day. At the Police Court .an information against Chinese shopkeepers for unlawfully, selling Chinese brandy was dismissed on a technical point, but a fresh information was laid. " Charles John McLennan has been committed for trial for breaking and entering.
