DURBAN, November 21
Major-General Sir- Cornelius F. defy, commandant of the second division of the British Army corps, balden appointed to the command of the column marching to the relief of Ladysmith. Idn McAllan, writing of .General Clery In the "Daily Mail,", says:"Sir Francis Clery may be less wellknown than Lord Methuen, except in the hunting field, where he is a notable performer, or.in the service clubs or in ■ Pall Mall, thesprucest and best turned out man in London, but who yet has none of the "dandy" in his composition. Clefy is a hardworking soldier, in early days adjutant of a crack corps, a. staff college graduate,, who has served with distinction in Sotfth Africa, especially in battles against the redoubtable Zulus,, and was engaged in Egypt under Wolseley. Clery has few equals in the business of soldiering-; he knows every move, has a quick eve for- country, and. a clear knowledge what troops can and should do " \ General Joubert, with strong- reinforcements, is marching southward to intercept General Clery. "A force of 1700 Boers' is; looting Bouth" of Estcourt. 6000 more are iDjraging towards Greytowh South, ■west of Estcourt. .General White reports that the Ladysmith Garrison has a plentiful v supply of ammunition. ; 1 " The Boer trenches before the town ' have been turned into a quagmire by the heavy rains. < ... DURBAN", November 20. . . A Vepott from 'Ladysmith on November 18 stated that the troops were in goQH health. It is considered they will he able to hold out for two months.
