Mr Ti K. Macdonald has resigned the position of Superintendent Valuer to the Advances to Settlers Office.

An old maned Chas. Leech jumped off the Hutt bridge, but was rescued. He was out of work and in a morbid condition. He was remanded to enable him to be got kito the old men's home.

The Chamber of Commerce appointed a committee to consider the question of Government grading of meat for export, as is now done for butter. It was also decided that the Chamber agrees with the proposal to reduce the size of Wheat sacks from 240 to 200 lbs, in the interest of men who have to handle them.

The Grain Brokers' Association report that owing to scarcity of freight for oats to South Africa, less business is passing. There is, !ioa\'ever, no reduction in quotations, viz: A grade, 2/1; B, 2/; C, 1/11, f.0.b., sacks in.

Fire yesterday destroyed a tenroomed dwelling at Linwood occupied by R. H. Mitchell. The dwelling was insured for £450 in the Commercial Union. Th_ furniture .as imiilsiired.'

Cecil H. Lascelles, of Lake Heron station, formerly partner of Lascelles and Glen, merchants, died suddenly yesterday. The inquest to-day showed that deceased broke his leg Avhile indulging hi horse play a Aveek ago. He Avas getting on very well Avhen he complained of pain at the heart. This Avas caused by a clot of blood finding its way there. The inquest was adjourned.
