THE LAKE BAIKAL ICE-BREAKER.

The ice-breaker for Lake Baikal has been re-erected and successfully launched into the lake. The dimensions are 290 ft. by 50ft., and the displacement 4200 tons. The principle of -watertight sub-division has been carried very far, so that the vessel must be pierced in several compartments before she is in danger of sinking. There are three' sp+<- of triple expansion engines, working at a pressure of 1601b. Two sets drive twin propellers, fitted, as usual, at the stern, and the third propeller at the bow of the vessel. The last is for .he purpose of disturbing the water under the ice, so as to assist the heavy steel stem.to break up the solid field .cc, that it may be pushed aside by the advancing vessel. This is the first occasion (says the "English Mechanic") on which "so large a vessel has been built, shipped oh an oiean-going steamer, transferred to railway waggons, and finally re-erected.
