AN AUSTRALIAN WAR CORRESPONDENT.

MR KINNAIRD EOSE.

Among the men of peace who will be much disappointed if there is jio war with the Boers is Mr W. Kinnaird Kose, sometime editor of the "Brisbane Courier," but who made his name a household word during- the Graeco-Turkish war, as Renter's war correspondent. His thrilling narrative of the flight of the Greeks from'Larissa remains one of the smartest pieces of journalism on record. Mr Rose and other correspondents had a terrible experience in the mad rout and narrowly escaped being shot on several occasions by the panic-stricken Greek soldiery. By dint of endurance and. exceptional smartness in securing transport Mr Rose beat all his competitors in getting in touch with civilisation per telegraph, and he used his opportunities for a "scoop" to such purpose that all England rang- with praise of Reuter and Rose. The Graeco-Turkish war was not his maiden effort by any means, for he was special correspondent for the- "Scotsman" throughout the Russo-Turkish/ war, and saw most of the fighting from the crossing of the Danube till the advance on Adrianople, and was wounded twice, to wit, at Yeui Zara and Plevna. The rigours of the campaign and his wounds shattered Ms health completely, and he was invalided home before the conclusion of the war. Later, in 1870, he was sent out on a special mission tp Rounielia, Macedonia and Albama to enquire into the condition of the Christian population there and to be ready Ito take the field again if, as then seemed likely, war broke out over the carrying, out of the provisions of the Berlin Treaty, to which Russia took exception. Mr Rose then read for the Bar,; went out to Australia, and became erne of the members of the Royal Commission on i;Black-birding." -For four' years he filled the editorial chair of the "Courier" and coming Home ag\ain distinguished himself as Reuterjs Special in the Graeco-Turkish campaign aforementioned. He also represented the creat Cable Agency in they Atbara campaign, but a touch of tever prevented him seeing- the great battle which brought the Soudan jiiito the confines of civilisation.
