THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Thames Borough Council met on Friday night, when the Mayor placed the financial position of the borough before the councillors, stating that the total liabilities of the Council at date are £2915 5/1, made '■up as follows:—Bank overdraft on general account, £2738 1/6; accounts due and not paid, £100 5/9; wages shets, etc., to date, £27 3/7; overdraft Hospital and Charitable Aid rate account, £49 14/3. As against this, however, the library rate account is in credit £18 1/4, and the water supply account £1119 4/6, making the total credit balances £1137 5/10. Deducting this sum from the total liabilities of £2915 5/1, leaves the net indebtedness of the Council at date £1777 19/3. His Worship expressed the opinion rthat the Council should "go most exhaustively into every department with a view of effecting savings wherever possible', as it was self-evident that the general account could not stand themany demands made upon it, and that sooner or later the most rigid retrenchment would from sheer force of circumstances be necessary..

The meat and dairy inspector having placed his resignation in the hands of the committee, the secretary has notified the Borough Council. The Borough Council has suggested to the County Council a joint meeting- on Wednesday night to deal with matters connected with the resignation.

The Borough Council has voted the School of Mines a donation equal to the amount of the rates as has been the custom previously. A telegram has been received from the Treasury, Wellington, to the effect that a subsidy of £75 has been granted towards the cost of repairing the Waibtahi aqueduct.

The annual election to fill the office of Mayor .will shortly be held, and the two candidates, Messrs H. J. Greenslade (the retiring Mayor) and J. M.-.Poy, are both busy. It is generally expected that the contest will be close, but-that Mr Greenslade will about manage to beat his opponent, though'not by very much.
